Iowa County was formed in 1829 as one of the first territorial counties of Wisconsin. Prior to this time, Wisconsin was part of both the Illinois and Michigan territories, respectively.

The county derives it's name from the powerful, and at one time, invincible tribe of Iowa Indians. When organized as a county, under the territorial government of Michigan, Iowa County aggregated within it's jurisdiction, the present counties of Dane, Green, Grant, LaFayette and a portion of Rock. This is a rich mineral range, from which was mined 3/4 of the ore shipped from the county. Smelting furnaces are located in Linden, Highland, Mineral Point and Dodgeville.

Dodgeville is the county seat of Iowa County, which has the distinction of being the oldest working courthouse in Wisconsin.

We've created a chronology of events leading up to Wisconsin's statehood and somewhat beyond, including some "fun facts" for genealogists along the way relating to Iowa County specifically.

As time goes on, we plan on placing some brief histories of the communities that are or were in Iowa County. Watch for this to come!!
