owa County Newspapers

The information on the linked table (linked below) shows the different newspapers that at some time have graced the streets of Iowa County.

The reference source for this data is the book Genealogist's Guide to Southwest Wisconsin compiled by Wilson which was published in 1987 by Kinseekers Publications P.O. Box 184, Grawn MI 49637 (a copy is available at the Milwaukee (WI) Public Library (publication # R299.3 G 3366) and gives a list of newspapers, most of which started publishing in the 1880-1890's.

Besides this source, additional newspapers were found by using the WI Room newspaper listing from the Grant County WIGenWeb site and the Wisconsin Historical Society's online card catalog MADCAT.

Now, where can you find these rare gems? The answer to that question is - it all depends upon which newspaper you are seeking. Most of these papers can be found at either the Wisconsin Historical Society microforms room in Madison or at the Karrmann Library located on the UW-Platteville campus. If you are looking for Mineral Point papers, check out the Mineral Point Room located at the Mineral Point Library. Dodgeville? The Iowa County Historical Society has them. Highland? You are probably out of luck there. Nobody has been able to locate a respository with those newspapers as of yet.

The Wisconsin Historical Society will interlibrary loan films to other libraries. Just ask your library to contact them. UW-Platteville films circulate only within the UW Area Research Center facilities which includes the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison.
