March 1998 Meeting Minutes

Present: Mark Perry, Peggy Perry, Helene Bethke, John Hess, Neil Giffey

* The Secretary's report and Treasurer's report were read and accepted as written.
* We have 6 new members this month
* A vote, held via email and telephone, was held for the certificate design approval. We are using the same paper for both, with a portrait of Gov. Dodge on the Sesquicentennial once and the Wisconsin silouette for the other. The Sesqui certificate will have the gold foil lettering for the word "Sesquicentennial".
* The indexing project of the Rural Register of Montfort is almost all indexed. We will now need a proofreader. Richard R. has scanned in 1 year. This index will be made into a book. We will try to fill in missing information from area courthouses of Iowa, Grant, Richland Center, Crawford, and Dane counties. Helene will work on a cover design.
* We have opened a checking account at Anchor Bank in Dodgeville.
* We have a Post Office Box to use for our mail now - PO Box 123 in Dodgeville, which we can use as soon as the new post office opens.
* Fall Seminar update: the only agreeable date is October 3 for Jeff Trickle of Freeze Frame Photography to speak (and this could disappear if a wedding is booked for this date.) We could look into getting a speaker from the State Historical Society also.
* Web page update: Mark says "it's there".
* Our thank-you letter from State Representative Stephen Freese was read. This is for supporting Wisconsin Senate Bill 709 and Assembly bill B393.
* At the regional meeting in Delavan we will have a free table set up. There is an April 18 local history workshop that John plans on attending as a representative for ICHS. John has agreed to share his new knowledge with us as well.
* Mark will look into getting a table set up at the Iowa County fair.
* Member Eunice McCredie has offered us the cemetery index that she has compiled of Avoca and Highland areas. Questions arose as to which cemeteries have already been walked and recorded. ICHS has many, many cemeteries recorded - but they were done in mid 1970's.
* On May 30th a special cancellation for the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial will be available at each county seat post office. We decided to issue the next ICGS newsletter a bit early so we could get that cancellation.
