In February 2000, ICGS purchased some old paper probate records that we found listed on a website on the internet. Since purchasing them, we have made a photocopy of each page of each file and are working on making an acid free copy that we will encapsulate and place into a binder system that we will place in our collection in the Dodgeville Public Library.

Plan:

  • Create a copy of each page of each file
  • Encapsulate each page and place in a binder system
  • Place in our collection located at the Dodgeville Public Library
  • Index every name and place found in each file
  • Publish this index in book form and on our internet site
  • Lookups and copies of a file will be done for researchers

Status Report:

February 2002

  • Indexing has begun
  • A list of supplies needed to complete this project has been established and priced. Orders will be placed soon.

March 2002

  • The girls have been busy! Dawn, Cheryl and Kathy have been hard at work indexing these records from the copies they recieved just last month. Indexing is at least 75% complete at this time

April 2002

  • Did I hear correctly? All 3 girls are now done with the indexing portion?
  • Time to get going on compiling all the information for formatting and printing

May 2002

  • Dawn is not finished with her portion yet

June 2002

  • Dawn is still working on her indexing. What's that? Oh, she passed it onto Kathy and Cheryl to complete for her!

September 2002

  • A first set of supplies has been ordered

May 2003

  • Our supplies never arrived and we finally received a refund check from the vendor.
  • We originally intended to publish just the index to the records that we purchased. But once the index was completed, it was only a few pages of data. So, now the plan is to offer the complete record in the book complete with a table of contents and index. With the records that we have so far, that brings us to about 60 double-sided pages. We're going to attempt to gather more data and fill in some gaps by going to the courthouse and getting copies of other records. This may end up as volume books vs just a single book. This will depend upon what we find at the courthouse and how many pages of data we come up with.

December 2003

  • We are in negotiations with the courthouse. The prices for copying their records has us wondering if we could ever afford to complete this project. Cheryl has sent a letter to the Iowa County board asking if we could supply our own paper in exchange for the copies vs. paying the set copy fee.
  • We heard from the chairman, but his response leads us to believe that he didn't understand our question. Cheryl will write to him again in an attempt to clarify our request.

October 2006

  • The indexing is complete. The original formatting that we had for this book did not work, so we are currently working on another direction. We hope to have this book out very soon.
