You've asked for it - and we've listened! ICGS is working towards creating as complete as possible Resource Manual for genealogists researching for their Iowa County Wisconsin family. Starting in January 2002, ICGS meeting attendees will start working on creating a list of repositories along with the types of records available within each repository.

Plan:
  • Create a list of local repositories in the county and beyond
  • Write each repository a letter requesting resource information from them
  • Compile the information received into a booklet form
  • Publish this booklet for sale
  • Create FAQ pages for our website for different record groups to be no more than 2 pages each when printed

Status Report:

December 2001

  • A few FAQ pages have been written and published on our website. They can be found from our home page - check out FAQ listings from the main table menu.

January 2002

  • A list of repositories in the area was developed

February 2002

  • A draft letter was written and reviewed at our February meeting.
  • Our intention is to get this letter proofed and mailed before the March meeting date

March 2002

  • Letters were sent out with a requested return date of April 30, 2002
  • Member Connie DeMuth is accepting replies and will summarize them for us

April 2002

  • 3 letters were returned to us as undeliverable.
  • Some new addresses have been found that were previously unknown.
  • Will send out letter again in Mid-May to these new organizations
  • Several responses have come back via email. Very positive!

May 2002

  • Responses still coming in
  • Member Julia Hanneman-Schoenbach is working on creating online resources that pertain to this area from other libraries and their card catalogs.
  • This is a HUGE undertaking and the file currently contains well over 300 pages of raw, unformatted data!

November 2002

  • Connie DeMuth has sent a draft copy of the snail mail responses that we received.
  • Julia is still working on her online portion

May 2003

  • The book has been completed including formatting and a cover.
  • Now it's time to get a final print out ready for the printer.
  • Julia has sent in the work that she has completed to date.
  • Plans are to publish what we have so far and then resend to the non-responders and look for more organizations to send to and then publish another edition.
