BARBER Searching for Alice M. Barber, born 26, July 1846 in Iowa county. Father - Avery M. Barber, Mother - Mary C. Noyes. Thank you. Patricia Zook [9-1998]

BENNETT/HEWETT I am trying to trace some BENNETT ancestors who emigrated to Mineral Point in the 1830-40's. My evidence is based on a letter dated November,1845 from William to his family in Camborne, Cornwall. This letter unfortunately does not specify the County or State William BENNETT came from Camborne, Cornwall. William's wife was Rebekah HEWETT. They probably married in Camborne. William & Rebekah were small holding farmers (at least 100 acres) growing corn, oats, turnips, & potatoes, near a large farm of the VIVIAN family. William & Rebekah's daughter Mary died late July 1845 of a 'bowel fever'. William's neighbours, who were also from Cornwall, the RICHARDS, HOC(K)ING and PHILIPS lost children in the 1845 summer epidemic. William & Rebekah's other children were Jane, Maria and a second Mary. William's brother apparently joined them in Mineral Point in late 1845. William was a staunch Wesleyan Methodist, as was the rest of the family back in Cornwall.
Name: William BENNETT
Born: Camborne, Cornwall, England about 1805-15
Wife: Rebekah HEWETT
Born: Camborne area, Cornwall, England

Brother: Thomas HEWETT who was still in Cornwall in 1845
Children of William & Rebekah:
Mary BENNETT Died: July 1845, Mineral Point
Jane BENNETT Born: before 1845
Maria BENNETT Born: before 1845
Mary (II) BENNETT Born: November 1845, Mineral Point

Can anyone help with this? Thank you for your help

HUGHES HUGHES,Ellen born March 31, 1862 in Ridgeway, Wisconsin. I am wondering if any of her extended family's descendants still reside in Iowa county or if anyone checking this publication knows information. Ellen's father was listed in a hand-written journal as Elisha (the "s" is hard to make out, but I think this is correct) Hughes. No date or place of birth or death is given. Ellen's mother's name was not given, just said she died at the close of the Civil War. Elisha was in the Civil War. Ellen was raised for an unknown amount of time by the Fery family after her mother died. I am thinking maybe she was the youngest child. Her known siblings are: Joe Hughes; William Hughes; Hugh Hughes; Mary Hughes; and Jane Hughes. Ellen married James May in June 1886. I am able to trace the family after that. Does anyone know anything on Ellen's parents or siblings? The same journal said William married Elisabeth and had 4 children; Hugh was lost track of and Mary and Jane died. Any help would be appreciated. Pam Hays (9-1998)

LENNEVILLE In 1837, my gg grandfather and his family moved from Canada to Benton, WI - then a part of Iowa County. He worked as a lead miner near Benton. His first name and his wife's first name are unknown. Known childrens' first names are: Joseph, Louis, David, Gustavous, Moses and Adaline. Moses was the youngest, having been born April 13, 1832 in Canada. Moses probably attended school in the Benton area, because he could read and write English, although his father was French. The surname was LENNEVILLE. However, the name may have been spelled "Laneuville", "Laneville" or "Lenerville". I am seeking any and all information about this family ie: land records, church records, school records, tax records, etc. Thanks for your help! Robert Lenneville (3-1998)

MacFARLANE/WILLIAMS/DUNN My great Grandmother's Grandfather Hugh MacFARLANE married his partner's(Samuel DUNN) sister (Sarah DUNN), and their daughter Mary Ann MacFARLANE(WILLIAMS) was born to them in Mineral Point in 1836. They later moved when they read in the Congressional Record that the govt. was going to build a canal at Portage where they staked a claim. They closed out their "mining interests" in Mineral Point in 1840. One more note, I have a diary of Oliver Perry WILLIAMS who wrote that he had landed in Mineral Point in 1837 with 25 cents in his pocket, he later Married Mary Anne MacFARLANE, & they resided in Portage. I know that things were quite informal there in the 1830's, but I'd like to know if they left any trace...Thanks! Phil Porter (9-1998)

MORCOM I am conducting a study of the MORCOMs who had their roots in Cornwall and to a lesser extent (usually in the variant MORECOMBE) in Devon, England. I'm finding it difficult to get any coherent picture from the scattered references to MORCOMs in Iowa County. It is, of course, possible that the various MORCOMs only stopped briefly in the County on their way to mines in other states. I have the following disconnected records, all from Iowa County records:
General Land Office Record 1849/11/01 - George MORCOM registered 80 acres in Township 6N, Section NR 34, range 2E. I am told that this land is in Dodgeville Twp near the border with Eden Twp.
10 November 1853 Certification of Intention to Become a Citizen for George MORCOM, aged 41, native of England.
12 July 1854 Certification of Intention to Become a Citizen for John MORCOM, aged 26, native of England.

Thomas A MORCOM married Henrietta KAMM in Highland, Iowa, WI on 17 February 1881 [Source: IGI]
Elisha MORCOM married Libbie May HOOPER in Dodgeville , Iowa Co., WI on 22 September 1883 [Source: IGI]
Any further information on these individuals, or on other MORCOMs/ MORCOMBEs, in Iowa Co. would be much appreciated. Thank you.

NEIDERMEIER I am seeking information on Anna NEIDERMEIER and and husband, George LAMPE, from the Highland area. We have traced the LAMPE family back to an elder George LAMPE, who came to the Highland area from Hanover, Germany. I have no information on Anna's birthplace or parents. POWELL Hello, my name is Jo Ann Loghry. I live in Arkansas. I have been searching now for a long time for my husbands gr.gr. grandmother. She was born in Boscobel Sep.1835. It has often been called Grant Co. but I have learned that at that time it was Iowa Co.. Her parents were John POWELL and Susannah ( ) POWELL per the marriage document of their youngest daughter. According to the 1850 census Susannah was living in Boscobel and came from South Carolina and was all alone & 47 yrs. old with 4 children at home. Her children were Andrew J. POWELL, John POWELL, Susannah J. POWELL, & Mahala POWELL. In the will that Susannah made in 1865, another daughter, Rachel is mentioned. Rachel married a man with the surname of STEWART. This may be the same person that is listed on her sister, Susannah's marriage license. Susannah's brother, John POWELL is also listed on that license. At that time Andrew was 21, John 18, Susannah J. 15, & Mahala 9. In 1852 the dau. Susannah married Jesse Asbury FERRELL in Fennimore WI. Apparently her brother John was a witness to this marriage as well as a John STEWART. I have seen John (I think) married to a girl by the name of Maria ALLEN of Boscobel. Mahala POWELL married Robert W. R. TROUT and moved to Ft Leavenworth KS. Apparently another daughter, Cynthia POWELL, also married and moved to KS. Cynthia married Darius NEWBERRY. John had a son Edgar POWELL b. in Boscobel. He then m. a lady from Iowa name of Addaline GREENWOOD, then they moved to Custer Co. Nebraska. I have hit a dead end on them too. Also mentioned in Susannah's will is her infant granddaughter, also named Susannah, who's mother is Luzena (BATES) POWELL. John is deceased. Luzena marries again 2 years later to a Mr. Wood. The infant child is in the possession of the property, according to the will. This property was purchased or given to her in 1848, which means that it is located in Boscobel, then Iowa County, WI. I know the FERREL's were a busy family there in this area of WI. so it's not that they weren't known. Is there any family left? I still have lots of questions: did John (the father) die in the Blackhawk War? Was John (the son) killed in the Civil War, and if so, what unit was he in? Was it possibly the WI 20th, as Jesse Ferrel was in? What happened to Andrew Ferrell? He is listed on the 1850 census, but not the 1860. I am thankful for any help there is to be had, I am in the wall. Thank you. Jo Ann Loghry (6-1998, 9-1998 revised)
