BENNETT My g-g-grandfather Asabel (spelled Asahel/Asael in various documents) BENNETT was born in NY state (exact place and parentage unknown) in 1814, according to the 1850 CA census. He was living in Iowa Co., Mineral Point area, by 1840, and in Dec. 1840 he married Sarah Ann DILLY/DILLEY, daughter of Deriah and Almira Jameson DILLEY, born 1825, Delaware Co. OH. Asabel bought property near Waldwick in 1845 and in 1848. Three children were born there, George, Melissa, and Martha (my g-grandmother). In 1849, after hearing of discovery of gold in CA, Asabel decided to sell his farm and go west. He never returned and his 80 acre farm was still for sale in 1855, with brother-in-law Stephen DILLEY listed as person to contact about it. We wonder if there were any other of his family in the area, and would greatly appreciate any clues as to his background. Please e-mail to Margaret Stapleton (Mar 2000)

BLOTZ
Need parent names, sibling names, and any information for Charles Mathew and Hazel (nee WILLIAMS) BLOTZ. They had two children - Billy (don't know if it was William) and Catherine Ann. Charles grew up on the family farm near Dodgeville. He had two sisters - Berta (married to Ernie LONGFELLOW) and Teresa as well as several brothers whose names I don't know. Hazel (I think her father's name was Charles) had twin sisters Merle and Pearl, a brother Charles, and a sister Leola. Charles and Hazel BLOTZ are the great grandparents of my children who are the grandchildren of Catherine Ann (nee BLOTZ) DAVIS. Thank you for additional information you may be able to provide. Dianna Davis (Sep 2000)

BOWDEN The story is finally taking shape after help from the Linden Historical Society and the kind people at the Mineral Point Room and Platteville library. Is there anyone connected to Joseph BOWDEN and his wife, Elizabeth WEARNE BOWDEN? Joseph was born in Phillack in 1805 and died in LInden in 1883. Elizabeth was born in 1806. The couple moved to Linden, probably in the late 1840's. They had many children including Richard, William H, Joseph, Frederick, James, Eilza Jane (JEFFREY), and Emeline (CRASE). Another daughter, Emma, married James HOSKING and they had a daughter, Emily. Emma died in 1860 and her parents
raised her little daugher, Emma. Does anyone know of a HOSKING family in Linden? Can't seem to find him. My other Linden families are TREGLOWN/TREGLOAN and CRASE. Would love to hear from others.

HOLMAN
I need some assistance in locating information about certain of my ancestors that settled in Iowa County in the 1840s era. John HOLMAN & Elizabeth POLLARD were my ggg grandparents. Their son, John HOLMAN & Mary Ann OATEY were my gg grandparents. Their son, William Henry HOLMAN (aka Henry HOLMAN & W.H. HOLMAN) & Elizabeth "Bessie" JONES were my ggrandparents. I am specifically trying to locate any information on William Henry HOLMAN, Bessie JONES and two sisters, namely Elizabeth HOLMAN & Jenfor/Jenifer HOLMAN. Some additional information would be:
William Henry HOLMAN b 07-28-1849 Montreal, Canada. Came to Iowa County with his parents & siblings in about 1855 era. In late 1870s era, married Elizabeth Bessie JONES b 03-06-1854 Penna. (unknown location of marriage). The family then went westward. They had three children:
Lillian Catherine (1879 - So. Dakota), Joseph Henry (1880 - Colo.) & John William or William John (1882 - Colorado). At unknown date/location, William Henry & Bessie JONES split up. In 1895, William Henry marries a Sarah Jane ANDERSON in Iowa County. Little is known of her, other than her family was in Iowa County since 1850 era. Her father was a Mr. HILLERY and her mother was Margaret CALVERT. After Mr. HILLERY's death, Margaret married a James WWILLIAMS, another long time resident of Iowa County (this marriage was in 1867 era). It is presumes that Sarah married someone named ANDERSON. William Hnery died in Idaho in 1912. Bessie died in Butte, Mt. in 1906, No additional information is known on Sarah Jane except she was with William Henry in Wardner, Idaho in 1906 era.

Jenfor/Jenifer HOLMAN b 04-07-1856, Highland, Iowa County, Wis. In early 1870s era, married a Michael SCHUTTE b 1843 era, a long time Iowa county resident. They had four children : Joseph (1872), George
08-29-1873 & d 08-18-1950 Minn.), Joseph Michael ( 11-05-1876 & d as a youth in Iowa County), Camelia (12-27-1878). In 1880, this family was in Platteville area of Grant County. Other than George, it is unknown what happened to this family after 1880. Michael and his brother Peter are in the History of Iowa County book from 1881 era. I have seen certain page copies from that book. The 1894 era Probate of her father's estate lists that she is in Platteville.

Elizabeth HOLMAN b 05-07-1859, Highland, Iowa County, Wis. In 1879, she married a George SIMES in Iowa County. Mr. SIMES and his parents were reportedly from the Madison area. However, on 12-11-1881, Lizzie HOLMAN married a John WILLIAMS, at the home of her brother, W.H. HOLMAN, near Golden, Colorado. Mr. WILLIAMS and his parents were reportedly from Wisconsin. Certain postal money orders were sent during the 1880s from John WILLIAMS to Elizabeth WILLIAMS. In 1889 era, one was sent to her from Golden to Highland, Wisconsin. Her father's 1894 era Probate lists that she is in Golden, Colorado. It is unknown what may have happened to this family.

Any assistance that you might provide on these family members, would be greatly appreciated. I will honor any reasonable costs for research or search/copies type related fees. Sincerely,
William J. Holman (Sep 2000)

JANSEN
I am looking for information on Henry JANSEN born 12/11/1835 and died 4/4/1883 in Highland, WI. He must have met Christina HASELHOFF (3/7/1838 - 7/16/1897 Highland, WI) in Westphalia, state of North Rhein, North Germany/Prussia at that time. Supposedly Henry was a commoner and Christina was a teacher in Germany and her parents wouldn't allow her to marry him so they ran off to Holland where his sister lived and were married (abt 1860) there before coming to America. Christina taught at Cemterville for many years - "the German School" and Henry was a miner at Dry Bone. They had 6 children: Mary (John BOMPKAMP), John (Cercencia KROLL), Rosina (Henry V. SSCHNEIDER), Anna Marie (Henry MINTER), Henry M. (Mary MINTER), and William (Mayme SSCHNEIDER). On the 1880 census for Highland, Iowa County, WI - the family was listed as JOHNSON, but all the names were the same. The family, this one or the following generations, crossed over to Richland County too. I am willing to share information that I have. Nancy Lukas (Mar 2000)

I just found this in the LDS...So now I am wondering was her surname TRENARY or TRAVARROW? My aunt said she copied it off her tombstone and it was TRAVARRA. Here is the LDS entry.
WILLIAM JEFFREY Sex: M
Marriage(s):
Spouse: CATHERINE TRENERY
Marriage: 15 Oct 1868
Mineral Point, Iowa, Wisconsin

This family may have been Methodist! I know my Great grandmother was a very Church going lady and was very involved in Delavan with the Methodist church in this town. So she may have got that from her background as I don't think the SERGEANT's were Methodist's! These are hints that may help you find something. I am afraid I don't have a lot...Sorry. Thanks again.

McCRACKEN
Hugh McCAKEN, our relative, was a merchant in Dodgeville. A building owned by him and Dr. GOODLAND was destroyed in a fire in Dodgeville in 1856. It had been occupied as a drug store and a dwelling. The loss was $10,000 which must have been huge in those days. We haven't been able to find Hugh and his family from that time on, and we wondered whether they died in the fire, or whether they might have moved on. They seem to have disappeared from Dodgeville. Does anyone have any information on the McCRACKEN family, or the Dodgeville fire? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Eileen Matthew (Dec 2000)

McDONALD Desperately looking for any information about a marriage reported in the IGI between a Margaret SKINNER and a Hiran (actually Hiram) McDONALD. This marriage is said to have taken place on 15 January, 1837 in Iowa County, Wisconsin. These are my great-great-grandparents and I would be grateful for any information concerning their marriage or any traces they may have left in Iowa County. Hiram McDONALD served in the US Army at Fort Winnebago from 1830 to 1835. Their first child was born 1840 (Emma McDONALD, perhaps born in Iowa County) and by 1842 they were living in Green Lake County, or what later became Green Lake County, where Hiram spent the rest of his life. If anyone would be willing to look up information for me I would be extremely grateful. With many thanks, Peter Janke (Dec 2000)

MOSCOW RESIDENTS
Several of my relatives were original residents (other than the Native Americans) in the Moscow Township. I am looking for history of Moscow. References that I am already in possession of are: History of Iowa County, 1881; The History of Moscow, 1919 by Bjorn Holland, and The History of Moscow published in the early 1960's. There are also books that I know of concerning the schools in the area and also a book of commemorative biographies for Iowa, and surrounding counties. Please contact me if you have books or periodicals which reference the history of the Moscow area prior to 1900. Richard O. Jacobson (Mar 2000)

MULLEN I am having a difficult time tracking my great-grandfather's family. The parents are Francis MULLEN of Ireland and Elizabeth CAGAN of Ireland. Elizabeth immigrated through New York. They were married at St. Paul's in Mineral Point on August 21, 1851. Census records show that they farmed in Linden Township. They had five children: John T., James, Margaret, Francis and Mary. (John T. is my great-grandfather.) We believe the children were born between 1852 and 1863. There are baptismal records for at least the first two children at St. Paul's in Mineral Point. At that point in time, the records show the children with a last name of McMULLEN. In 1880, Francis and Elizabeth had a messy divorce in Mineral Point. Elizabeth and the children seem to disappear from the census records after 1880, and Francis seems to disappear shortly after that. We believe somehow we are related to the Thomas MULLEN and Bridget DARCY who are in St. Paul's cemetary. This might be a cousin or sibling or Francis. We are also wondering about Mary McMULLEN EDDY. There is a record of marriage between a Mary McMULLEN and Charles EDDY on June 21, 1887 in Mineral Point. Could this be Francis's youngest daughter? I notice that she is in the cemetery in St. Paul's. As I look at the COOGANs in St. Paul's cemetary I also began to wonder if this is a variation of Francis's wife's maiden name (CAGAN), and if she had family in Mineral Point. I have been to Mineral Point to do some of this research and to the archives in Platteville. If anyone can help me or has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Liz Petschel (Dec 2000)

ROGERS Looking for information on Thomas ROGERS b., 01 Jan. 1818, Mawgan on Menage, Cornwall, England. Married Anes (unknown) abt. 1848 maybe in England, maybe not until just prior to 1850 in Wisconsin. Can find no record of marriage, however they are listed as husband and wife on the 1850 WI federal and state census. Thomas applied for citizenship in 1851. Matthew BENNETT and Francis VIVIAN signed as witnesses on the document. A son, Thomas V. ROGERS Jr. was born to this couple on Oct. 9, 1853 in Mineral Point. They lived in Graysville settlement. Anes apparently died shortly after the child was born according to family legend. We don't have any further information on her death or location of burial. May have been an epidemic victim. Thomas did not remarry. Thomas' obituary revealed a sister living in Mineral Point and counted in their household on the 1870 census. This information was previously unknown to us.

Sister was Elizabeth ROGERS, b. 11 May, 1815, Mawgan on Menage, Cornwall, England. Her parents are listed as James and Mary ROGERS. She married John RICHARDS 20, Aug. 1836 in Illogan parish. They had 7 children: Mary J. RICHARDS b. abt. 1837; Christiana RICHARDS b. abt. 1840; Alfred RICHARDS b. abt. 1839; Alice RICHARDS b. abt. 1839 (twins?); John RICHARDS b. abt. 1842; James RICHARDS b. abt.1844; Emma RICHARDS b. abt. 1845. Thomas ROGERS and John RICHARDS came to Mineral Point in 1848. Shortly thereafter John sent for wife Elizabeth and the children. Before they arrived in Mineral Point, John RICHARDS was accidentally killed in a mining accident. Elizabeth married James BENNETT 9 April, 1849 in a civil ceremony. They had 5 additional children of their own. Children of Elizabeth (ROGERS) (RICHARDS) BENNETT and James BENNETT were: Matthew BENNETT b. abt. 1850; Joseph G. BENNETT b. abt. 1852 (possibly married Linda GARTHWAITE abt 1874); Henry M. BENNETT b. abt.1854; Hariette A. BENNETT b. abt. 1857; Sarah C. BENNETT b. abt. 1857 (another set of twins?). James BENNETT died 03 Aug. 1876.

Elizabeth died 22 April, 1899 at the home of son Joesph G. BENNETT. She is buried at Graceland cemetery, Mineral Point. In light of this new information about a sister Elizabeth and her marriage to James BENNETT, it appears that Matthew BENNETTt may have been a sibling or cousin to James. This may solve the mystery surrounding one of the signatures on the citizenship document, but we do not know what the relationship to the Vivian was who also signed the document. Friend or relative?

Thomas V. ROGERS Jr. married Eliza Viola AUSTIN, daughter of Mary Ann HENNESSEY and Thomas AUSTIN. The AUSTIN family settled in Mineral Point in 1871 from Ohio. Some of their children married into these families: QUICK, ROETHER, KNAPP, TORGERSON. Thomas V. ROGERS, Sr., Thomas V. ROGERS Jr. and Eliza (AUSTIN) ROGERS relocated to Dakota Territory in abt. 1883.

If anyone has any information to share on the BENNETT's that were from this family, what happened to Anes ROGERS or how the VIVIAN family is connected to Thomas ROGERS, please contact
Robin Bobeck. Any help will be greatly appreciated (Sep 2000)

STEPHENS Most of the Thomas STEPHENS data in Iowa County concerns Colonel Thomas STEPHENS and his wife Jane, especially in the Grant Deed books. When Jane and the title "Col." are left out, there is no way to determine which Thomas STEPHENS is involved. The family can be found in the 1860 census in Dodgeville, pg 23 (of the Fieldhouse survey), family no 295 (incorrectly spelled STEVENS). Aside from Mary Louise STEPHENS and her sister Irine (who married and moved to Grant County), the other siblings later dissapear. None of the boys enlisted or were drafted for the Civil War. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nancy Poquette

TOAY I am researching William TOAY. His son Michael TOAY born 1865 in Ridgeway (Iowa County) Wisconsin ended up in North Dakota, (Stutsman County). Mike named his farm near Jamestown North Dakota the "Fairview Stock Farm."around 1905-1912. In 1918, map of Hazel Green township in Grant County Wisconsin, Section 12 there is a "Fairview Stock Farm" owned by John H. RALPH. There are also shown the Roy Falph School and Geo C RALPH. In addition, the next township west of Hazel Green is "Jamestown". It is said that after William left the family sometime after 1885, that he went to "Iowa" and "sold or bought a farm" Is this a coincidence or is there some connection between the TOAY and RALPH families? Does anyone have any ideas or clues to help me find more about William TOAY? Thanks, Barb Andersen (Mar 2000)

TREGLOWN Henry TREGLOWN came to Linden from Cornwall in the early 1850's. I do not know whether he came alone or with relatives. Shortly after his arrival in Linden, he married Mary CRASE. She arrived with her parents and seven siblings from Trejorran, Cornwall, also in the early 1850's. They had 10 children: Alfred who married Julia VIAL of LInden; Jenny who married Thomas JEFFREY of Linden; William H. who married Emma J. HOSKING "of Colorado"; Olivia who married Thomas FAULL of Linden; Frederick who married Maggie DUGGAN of Calumet; Etta, who did not marry; Allie who married Morris MORIARTY; Walter, unmarried in 1901; Alden, who married Millie SMITH; and Lewellyn who married Lillian HEATHCOCK. Many of the males went to Butte, Montana. Are there any connections with your family? Does anyone know who George and JC TREGLOWN were, who lived in Linden at the same time? Brothers or cousins of Henry? Any CRASE of HOSKING connections? Thanks. Gay Knutson (Jun 2000)

TREGLOWN Since my last message, I have graciously been sent the 1901 Iowa County Commemorative Biographical Record. This was invaluable as I found out my gggrandfather was Henry TREGLOWN (1824). He and his wife, Mary CRASE TREGLOWN (1835), came to Linden from Cornwall. They had 10 children, one of whom was my ggrandfather WH TREGLOWN who married Emma J.HOSKING "of Colorado." They spent the early years of their marriage in Linden and had three kids, including my grandfather, William Garfield TREGLOWN. Emma died in Butte in 1895. WH remarried a " Mrs. RICHARDS of Dodgeville." If anybody is connected to any of these people or knows anything else, I'd be really interested. Thanks, Gay Knutson (Jun 2000)

VICTORA I am looking for any information on Catherine VICTORA, who married George LAMPE of Highland. She was his second wife, after first wife Rosa died. My ggrandfather George Jr., was their first child. On the 1870 census record, Highland Village, Avoca P.O., Catherine is 26 and lists her birthplace as Bohemia. So far I have not had any luck in contacting any VICTORAs in the Iowa county area. I have found one man whose VICTORAs settled in IA, and if anyone has any VICTORA information, I'd appreciate it. If I could locate her death record, maybe there would be parents listed. Right now I cant locate the information that was sent to me from some great lady in Highland, but I'm pretty sure that's where she's buried. Thanks. Sandra Everson (Mar 2000)

WEARNE
The IGI lists several POLKINGHORNs and WEARNEs in Iowa County, WI. With the proximity of Iowa county, WI to Grant county, WI and Jo Daviess county, IL, I think there may be a connection to my family:
I am researching my g-g-grandfather's family. He was Richard WEARNE born in England (probably Redruth, Cornwall), married Mary POLKINGHORN (born 11 Aug 1835 in Redruth, Cornwall) in 1857 in Redruth, and came to the USA about 1863. Richard's name is on the 1870 census of Galena, Jo Daviess county, IL. He and his family moved to Dodge county, NE, about 1875. Mary came to the USA before Richard with their 2 children, Charlotte and Richard. Another daughter, Emma, was born in Galena, IL. I found 2 POLKINGHORN men in Grant County, WI, in the 1840 miner's census. Can anyone help me make connections?

YOULTON
This family is found all together in Dodgeville in the 1850 census. On microfilm, many of the pages pf the 1860 census are too faint to read, but we know they were there at least until 1866 (in Linden, thanks for a school district census which shows a family of YOULTONs enrolled in the Bloomfield school.). We also have John's naturalization papers. There is a woman named Marion YOULTON who may have been a sibling, but she was not listed in the 1850 census with the family. She may have been working out of the home is she were an older sibling. There is a Joseph YOULTON (the youngest brother) who marries a woman named Jane, but after they lost the wife's inherited land, they left. Lastly, sibling Richard YOULTON shows up as a miner in Ontonagon Co., MI in the 1860 census. Any additional information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
